In October 2019, Sila Sveta’s art project ‘Freedom Has No Boundaries’ was projected onto the Berlin TV Tower during the ‘Festival Of Lights’ in Germany. The main theme of the mapping festival was the 30-year anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Freedom Has No Boundaries was created in collaboration with 15 young contemporary Russian artists, including Pokras Lampas, Andrey Shugalsky, Vladimir Vies, Tatyana Zhilyaeva, Stas Bashkatov, Svyat Vishnyakov, Nastya Vishnyakova, Vasily Schikhachevsky, Polina Parygina, Tatyana Yegoshina.
The visuals explore different interpretations of ‘unfreedom’. Every artist came up with their own metaphors for the concept: a nude woman with parts of her body covered with black bars, a police baton, a fly strip with dead insects glued to it, the observing eye of the ‘Big Brother’, an index finger covering the lips from a Soviet-era poster.
In between them, a thermometer with the constantly rising temperature that indicates political tensions. In the context of the festival, it symbolizes the pivotal point in the history of GDR and FDR that led to the fall of the Berlin wall.
“Walls are a metaphor for the lack of freedom. Its fall demonstrates how absurd censorship is, says Sila Sveta’s Co-founder and Creative Director Alexander Us. The issue is relevant to many countries across the world. There are different variations of ‘unfreedom’ everywhere but our show focused on the story of GDR and FDR.’
A radio set became another important symbol of the show. Music played a crucial role in the cultural shift that led to the fall of ‘the Wall’. The metaphor is clear: the policeman’s hand turns on ‘The Internationale’, a hand of a guy in a leather jacket turns on the techno beat. A well-known composer Andrei Oid worked on the sound design of the project.
In addition to the main video projection, Sila Sveta published two AR-masks on Instagram.
One of them puts a virtual tape with the word ‘Censorship’ on a user’s face, another mask places a 3D model of the Berlin TV tower with art projections on the real-world surface.
